Since friends and family have been asking me about setting up their new Macs, I figured I’d compile some of the stuff that I do/like/use for anybody wandering in from a Google search, or just from. I spend a lot of time using my Mac, so I hunt down lots of little things. Browsing: The bulk of my peers spend their computer time browsing the web and consuming media. It’s great that we have lots of options in terms of maximizing battery life, performance, and functionality. Safari: PROS. Best for battery life, RAM consumption.

New Mojave privacy and anti-tracking features. New, efficient safari extensions update. Apple ID ‘keychain’ password management. EXTENSIONS uBlock Origin. Extremely reliable ad-blocking service, per-element blocking. Must be compiled and installed manually via GitHub. Requires page-redraws.

Ad-blocking service that does not require a page redraw for every interaction/request. Easy to install, very lightweight. Uses new Safari extensible framework.

Drag ‘n’ drop Google Drive folder compatibility. Google account password management. Google tracking services. EXTENSIONS. DO NOT confuse with regular ‘uBlock’.

Extremely reliable ad-blocking service, per-element blocking. Anti-tracking extension created by the EFF.

Extremely reliable ad-blocking service, per-element blocking. Privacy Badger.

Anti-tracking extension created by the EFF. HTTPS Everywhere. Forces secure connections, created by the EFF.Personal Anecdotes:.

I keep all of these browsers available, and use Safari primarily. Using Firefox shreds my battery. Chrome uses lots of RAM in my use case.If you encounter web errors, always try disabling ad-block and other extensions before trying other troubleshooting.

Antivirus: “Macs don’t get viruses, right?”. General Info: Macs do have built-in XProtect that is silently monitoring and updated in the background for exploits and vulnerabilities.

Macs have a built-in firewall that monitors TCP and UDP ports associated with your Wi-Fi and ethernet ports. Macs handle userland privilege elevation differently than Windows does, and Gatekeeper checks developer signatures. Macs are not the most commonly targeted platform, as the MacOS user base is much smaller than the Windows userbase. Smart browsing and careful online activity is a very effective deterrent to most infection vectors. Adblockers do prevent malicious banner-ad network based connections. My family and I still use paid antivirus software.

It's super convenient to have available as an option! So as an example: I'm booted to MacOS.

I'm verifying a drawing on AutoCAD inside of my (fusion/parallels) virtual machine, and I run into a portion of the design that is too big for my VM to handle. I save my work, restart into Bootcamp, and finish verifying the drawing no problem no work lost. I then send it off to the drafting team, and restart back into MacOS no problem.

If I only had access to Windows in a VM, I'd have to deal with an extra hour in rendering and slowdowns. This way, you get the best of both worlds when you need it!.
