Cod retail keys are not compatible with steam, due to steam having a different patch version, much like gta 5, he can however buy the game on steam and change the cd key in-game, that works, but it's obviously simpler to download a no-dvd crack. Not whatever, but most things. It's true that requiring the CD can be seen as copy protection so it would be illegal to crack it yourself as per the DMCA or, at least, something that will get you in court. Similar to how the two or three guys that cracked DVD's scheme were wanted for it but you can still download rips of DVDs you already own as backups.
IP is pretty stupid. And despite what most people think, distribution has very little to do with what's legal. In this case, it's legal to use a no-CD crack (last time I checked) as long as you legally purchased the game within the same country, although your ISP can still fuck you over and it would take years to get them off your ass. One last thought: assisting someone in this is a gray area. Any users that are, for example, suggesting they can help by PM would be wise to delete their comment (or wait for a mod to do it).
