Different Macs have one or the other. The higher end ones have the compatibility for discrete GPU's which are not an integrated version bolted on to a CPU, such as an i7 CPU on 13'macbook etc.

The machines at the highest end of the pricing bracket have more than enough power to smoothly run a rich 3D environment as the CAN facilitate a discrete GPU. A gaming PC puts all emphasis on such hardware so making a game that will run 'well' on all gaming PC's is not that hard, from a dev point of view. Where the issue lies is the disparity amongst the Mac platform with regard to what will or will not run certain games smoothly enough on different machines. My top end 15' Macbook Pro would have no issues but the 13' model would, due to no ability to defer from the integrated GPU.
